Balti Fried Fish Recipe

( Pakistan fried fish )

A very popular Pakistani  dish for frying freshwater or sea fish. The coastal city of Karachi is particularly famous for this delicious seafood.

 

Ingredients

675 g White cod fillet
150 ml Cooking oil
30 ml Cornflour
2 pieces Tomatoes
1 piece Onion, sliced
2 tbsp Fresh coriander, chopped
1 tbsp Lemon juice
1 1/2 tsp Garam Masala
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Garlic pulp
1 tsp Dried red chilies, crushed
- Apricot chutney and paratha to accompany

 

Method :

  • Prepare cod fillet by skinning and cutting into bite-sized pieces and chilling it in the refrigerator.

  • In a mixing bowl combine together the coriander, garam masala, crushed red chilies, garlic pulp, salt, onion and lemon juice. Mix well and set aside.

  • Place the tomatoes in boiling water for a few seconds, remove with a slotted spoon and peel off the skins. Roughly chop up the tomatoes and add to the mixture.

  • Transfer the mixture to a blender and process for approx. 30 seconds.

  • Remove fish from refrigerator and add to the mixture from the blender and mix thoroughly.

  • Add the cornflour and mix thoroughly again until the cod pieces are well coated.

  • Heat oil in a wok until very hot, then lower the heat slightly and put in the cod pieces, a few at a time - careful not to splash the oil.

  • Cook by turning them gently, with a pair of long chopstick or s slotted spoon, for approx. 5 minutes or until lightly browned.

  • Remove the fish and drain on kitchen paper.

  • Serve immediately with apricot chutney and paratha to accompany.
